Lifted Small Group and one on one personal training

Why I Stopped Using Half the Machines in the Gym and Focused on Functional Training

For years, my workouts were like a checklist: leg press, chest press, lat pulldown, and so on. I’d move from machine to machine, following the routine I’d picked up from a magazine or a well-meaning gym buddy. But something felt off. Despite the effort I was putting in, I wasn’t seeing the kind of progress I wanted—not just in my physical appearance but in my strength, mobility, and overall well-being. That’s when I discovered functional training, and everything changed.

What Is Functional Training?

Functional training focuses on exercises that mimic real-life movements and engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously. The goal isn’t just to build muscle or burn calories but to improve the way your body moves and performs in everyday life. Think squats instead of leg presses, pull-ups instead of lat pulldowns, and kettlebell swings instead of seated rows.

Unlike machines, which often isolate specific muscles and restrict your range of motion, functional training emphasizes natural movement patterns. This approach trains your body to work as a cohesive unit, enhancing balance, coordination, and strength.

Why I Made the Switch

  1. Practical Strength I realized that the strength I was building on machines didn’t always translate to the real world. For example, I could push heavy weights on the chest press, but lifting a heavy box or carrying groceries up the stairs felt like a struggle. Functional training focuses on practical, full-body strength that makes daily tasks easier.
  2. Improved Mobility and Balance Gym machines often lock you into a fixed path of motion, which can limit your mobility over time. Functional exercises like lunges, planks, and single-leg deadlifts challenged my balance and flexibility, helping me move more freely and reducing the risk of injuries.
  3. Core Engagement Almost every functional exercise requires you to engage your core for stability. This is a far cry from sitting on a machine where your core does very little work. Over time, I noticed a significant improvement in my posture and core strength.
  4. Time Efficiency Functional training allows you to target multiple muscle groups in a single movement. Instead of spending an hour going through 10 different machines, I could complete a highly effective workout in half the time using tools like kettlebells, resistance bands, or even just my body weight.
  5. Mental Engagement Functional training kept me mentally engaged because it required focus and coordination. Learning new movement patterns, like a Turkish get-up or a farmer’s carry, made my workouts feel fresh and exciting.

How to Get Started with Functional Training

  • Learn the Basics: Begin with foundational movements like squats, push-ups, and planks. Focus on proper form to prevent injuries.
  • Incorporate Free Weights: Swap machines for dumbbells, kettlebells, or resistance bands to add variety and challenge to your workouts.
  • Think Full-Body: Choose exercises that work multiple muscle groups, such as deadlifts, pull-ups, or kettlebell swings.
  • Work with a Trainer: If you’re unsure about technique, consider working with a trainer who specializes in functional fitness to guide you.

The Results Speak for Themselves

Since focusing on functional training, I’ve noticed improvements in every aspect of my fitness. I’m stronger, more flexible, and less prone to injuries. Tasks like carrying heavy shopping bags or sprinting up a flight of stairs now feel effortless. More importantly, I’ve developed a deeper connection to my body and how it moves, which has been incredibly empowering.

Functional training isn’t just a workout style—it’s a philosophy that prioritizes movement, strength, and adaptability. If you’re tired of feeling stuck in your fitness journey, it might be time to step away from the machines and explore what functional training can do for you.
